GIVE WHILE WE LIVE(JOSHUA 15:13-19)

(수 15:13) 여호와께서 여호수아에게 명령하신 대로 여호수아가 기럇 아르바 곧 헤브론을 유다 자손 중에서 분깃으로 여분네의 아들 갈렙에게 주었으니 아르바는 아낙의 아버지였더라//And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, {even} the city of Arba the father of Anak, which {city is} Hebron.

(수 15:14) 갈렙이 거기서 아낙의 소생 그 세 아들 곧 세새와 아히만과 달매를 쫓아내었고//And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

(수 15:15) 거기서 올라가서 드빌 주민을 쳤는데 드빌의 본 이름은 기럇 세벨이라//And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before {was} Kirjathsepher.

(수 15:16) 갈렙이 말하기를 기럇 세벨을 쳐서 그것을 점령하는 자에게는 내가 내 딸 악사를 아내로 주리라 하였더니//And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

(수 15:17) 갈렙의 아우 그나스의 아들인 옷니엘이 그것을 점령함으로 갈렙이 자기 딸 악사를 그에게 아내로 주었더라//And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

(수 15:18) 악사가 출가할 때에 그에게 청하여 자기 아버지에게 밭을 구하자 하고 나귀에서 내리매 갈렙이 그에게 묻되 네가 무엇을 원하느냐 하니//And it came to pass, as she came {unto him}, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted off {her} ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?

(수 15:19) 이르되 내게 복을 주소서 아버지께서 나를 네겝 땅으로 보내시오니 샘물도 내게 주소서 하매 갈렙이 윗샘과 아랫샘을 그에게 주었더라//Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.

Then his coach approached and told him he was close to breaking a record. Would he like to go back in? “I’m good,” said Barkley. “I’d rather see the young boys eat.” Barkley chose to give up a record so his young teammates could get playing time.

필라델피아 이글스의 슈퍼스타 미식축구 선수 사콘 바클리는 팀이 여유롭게 앞서가던 때 벤치에서 잠시 쉬고 있었다. 그가 계속 뛰지 않아도 되는 상황이었다. 그때 감독이 그가 기록을 깰 수 있는 기회가 왔다고 말했다. 그가 다시 뛰고 싶어 했을까? 바클리는 말했다. “괜찮아요. 젊은 선수들이 뛰는 걸 볼게요.” 바클리는 팀의 젊은 선수들에게 출전 기회를 주기 위해 자신의 기록을 포기하기로 한 것이다.

When Israel inhabited the promised land, Caleb was one of only two Israelites to survive the exodus all the way from Egypt (SEE NUMBERS 14:30). He’d enjoyed military success and had driven out an enemy nation (JOSHUA 15:14). Now, as he faced a Canaanite stronghold, he said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher” (V. 16). Othniel did so, and Aksah married him. Caleb gave them land in the Negev desert (V. 19), but Aksah approached her father with a request. “Do me a special favor,” she said. “Give me also springs of water” (V. 19).

For four decades, Caleb had toiled to get to the promised land. Still in good health (14:10-11), he could have kept the valuable springs for himself. But he didn’t.

약속의 땅에 도달하기까지 사십 년 동안 힘들게 수고했던 갈렙은, 아직도 건강하여(14:10–11) 소중한 샘들을 자신을 위해 간직할 수도 있었지만 그렇게 하지 않았다.

Accumulating things for ourselves never means as much as we expect it to. Personal records get broken. Our possessions go to others. Let’s give while we live. As Saquon Barkley said, “(Let) the young boys eat.” TIM GUSTAFSON

우리 자신을 위해 어떤 것들을 쌓아두는 것은 우리의 기대만큼 그렇게 큰 의미가 없다. 개인 기록은 언젠가 깨어지게 마련이고, 우리의 소유물도 결국 남의 것이 된다. 사는 동안 나누어 주자. 사콘 바클리의 말처럼, “젊은 선수들이 뛰게 (해주자).”

Generous Father, please help me wisely share what You’ve given me.//자비로우신 하나님 아버지, 하나님께서 제게 주신 것들을 지혜롭게 나눌 수 있도록 도와주소서. 특별히 하나님의 창조섭리를 알 수 있게 해 주신 지혜를 나누는 일에 앞장서게 하소서. 그것을 위해 멀리 이동하는 수고를 쉬지 않게 하소서.

Scripture Insight(성경 통찰)

In Joshua 15:13-19, we read about Caleb’s generosity when he gave away the land with valuable springs. Generosity is a recurring theme throughout the Bible and was one of the refreshing attributes of the early believers in Jesus. Their embrace of Christ and His teaching was reflected in their openhandedness. Luke says, “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. . . . God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them” (Acts 4:32-34). The early church lived together as a community which factored into how they functioned, but they also demonstrated their love for Jesus by caring for the needs of others. Today, we can ask God to give us compassion for others and show us how to be generous with what He’s given us.

여호수아 15:13~19에서 우리는 갈렙이 귀한 샘들이 있는 땅을 내어 주며 보여 준 관대함을 읽게 된다. 관대하게 베푸는 것은 성경 전체에 걸쳐 반복해서 등장하는 주제이며, 초대교회에서 예수님을 믿었던 신자들에게서 나타난 아름다운 특징 가운데 하나였다. 그들이 그리스도와 그분의 가르침을 받아들였다는 사실은 자신의 소유를 아낌없이 나누는 모습으로 드러났다. 누가는 이렇게 기록했다: “믿는 무리가 한마음과 한 뜻이 되어 모든 물건을 서로 통용하고 자기 재물을 조금이라도 자기 것이라 하는 이가 하나도 없더라. … 사도들이 큰 권능으로 주 예수의 부활을 증언하니 무리가 큰 은혜를 받아 그 중에 가난한 사람이 없으니”(사도행전 4:32~34). 초대교회 신자들은 공동체를 이루어 함께 살아갔으며, 이러한 공동체 생활은 그들의 삶의 방식에도 영향을 미쳤다. 그러나 그들은 또한 다른 사람들의 필요를 돌봄으로써 예수님을 향한 사랑을 실천했다. 오늘날 우리도 하나님께 다른 사람들을 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 주시고, 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것을 어떻게 관대하게 나눌 수 있을지 가르쳐 달라고 기도할 수 있다.
