HOPE IN LOSS(EPHESIANS 1:3-14)

(엡 1:3) 찬송하리로다 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께서 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주시되//Blessed {be} the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly {places} in Christ:

(엡 1:4) 곧 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사 우리로 사랑 안에서 그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고//According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

(엡 1:5) 그 기쁘신 뜻대로 우리를 예정하사 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 자기의 아들들이 되게 하셨으니//Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

(엡 1:6) 이는 그가 사랑하시는 자 안에서 우리에게 거저 주시는 바 그의 은혜의 영광을 찬송하게 하려는 것이라//To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

(엡 1:7) 우리는 그리스도 안에서 그의 은혜의 풍성함을 따라 그의 피로 말미암아 속량 곧 죄 사함을 받았느니라//In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

(엡 1:8) 이는 그가 모든 지혜와 총명을 우리에게 넘치게 하사//Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

(엡 1:9) 그 뜻의 비밀을 우리에게 알리신 것이요 그의 기뻐하심을 따라 그리스도 안에서 때가 찬 경륜을 위하여 예정하신 것이니//Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

(엡 1:10) 하늘에 있는 것이나 땅에 있는 것이 다 그리스도 안에서 통일되게 하려 하심이라//That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; {even} in him:

(엡 1:11) 모든 일을 그의 뜻의 결정대로 일하시는 이의 계획을 따라 우리가 예정을 입어 그 안에서 기업이 되었으니//In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

(엡 1:12) 이는 우리가 그리스도 안에서 전부터 바라던 그의 영광의 찬송이 되게 하려 하심이라//That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

(엡 1:13) 그 안에서 너희도 진리의 말씀 곧 너희의 구원의 복음을 듣고 그 안에서 또한 믿어 약속의 성령으로 인치심을 받았으니//In whom ye also {trusted}, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

(엡 1:14) 이는 우리 기업의 보증이 되사 그 얻으신 것을 속량하시고 그의 영광을 찬송하게 하려 하심이라//Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

(요절: 고린도후서 12:8) God . . . has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. [EPHESIANS 1:3]

While out walking the family dog, my nephew Andy was hit by a car. Someone saw the accident and stopped to give him CPR and call for an ambulance. A ventilator kept him alive for a week. Miraculously, he was weaned off the sedation medicines and vent the day after Christmas and told his wife, parents, brother, and five children, “I love you.” Emotions and hope soared! But the very next day, he died.

조카 앤디가 반려견과 산책하던 중 차에 치였다. 사고를 목격한 누군가가 차를 세우고 심폐소생술을 하면서 구급차를 불렀다. 일주일 동안 앤디는 병원에서 인공호흡기로 버틴 후, 크리스마스 다음 날 기적적으로 진정제와 호흡기에서 벗어나 아내와 부모님, 형제, 그리고 다섯 자녀에게 “사랑한다”고 말했다. 감정과 희망이 솟구쳤다! 하지만 바로 다음 날 그는 세상을 떠났다.

All of his children, ages fifteen to twenty-one, spoke through their tears at his God-honoring memorial service. Daughter Julia read a quote that made those in attendance think: “It’s not about how much we lost. It’s about how much we have left.”

열다섯부터 스물한 살까지 그의 다섯 자녀가 하나님을 기리는 추모 예배에서 눈물을 흘리며 말했는데, 딸 줄리아가 읽은 한 인용구절이 참석자들의 마음을 울렸다. “중요한 것은 우리가 얼마나 많이 잃었나 하는 것이 아니라 우리에게 얼마나 많이 남겨져 있는가 하는 것입니다.”

But the truth is, those of us who knew and loved him lost so much with Andy’s passing-a beautiful life lived for Jesus-and he’s greatly missed. What do we have left that gives us hope? Ephesians 1 speaks of the spiritual blessings Andy and other believers have in Jesus: We’re “blameless in his sight” (V. 4), “predestined . . . for adoption to sonship” (V. 5), “(redeemed) through his blood” (V. 7), and “(forgiven) of sins (by) God’s grace” (V. 7). “The promised Holy Spirit” lives in us and guarantees “our inheritance” with Him in the life to come (VV. 13-14).

그러나 사실, 그를 알고 사랑했던 우리들에게 예수님을 위해 아름다운 삶을 살았던 앤디의 죽음은 너무나 큰 상실감을 주었다. 그가 정말 많이 그립다. 과연 우리에게 소망을 안겨줄 어떤 것이 남겨져 있을까? 에베소서 1장은 예수님 안에서 앤디와 다른 신자들이 누리는 신령한 복에 대해 이렇게 말한다. 우리는 “그 앞에 흠이 없는 자”(4절), “자기의 아들들이 되기로 예정한 자”(5절), “그의 피로 말미암아 속량된 자”(7절), “하나님의 은혜로 죄 사함을 받은 자”(7절)들이다. “약속의 성령”께서 우리 안에 거하시며, 장차 하나님과 함께 누릴 “우리의 기업”을 보증하고 계신다(13–14절).

SCRIPTURE INSIGHT(성경 통찰)

To encourage believers in Jesus to live godly lives in an ungodly world (Ephesians 4:1, 17), Paul begins this letter by reminding us how much God loves us and in Christ has “blessed us with every spiritual blessing” (1:3). Through Jesus, we’re chosen, redeemed, forgiven, saved, and adopted as His children into His family, destined to be His heirs. Distinctively marked and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we’re graciously cared for and given all that we need to live God-honoring lives as His children (vv. 3-14). Whatever challenges or trials we may face, and whatever losses and pain we may suffer, our heavenly Father “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,” for “his power . . . is at work within us” (3:20).

바울은 경건하지 않은 세상에서 예수님을 믿는 신자들이 경건한 삶을 살도록 격려하기 위해(에베소서 4:1, 17), 이 편지의 서두에서 하나님께서 우리를 얼마나 사랑하시는지, 그리고 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 “하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복”을 주셨다는 사실을 일깨워 준다(1:3). 우리는 예수님을 통해 선택받고, 구속받고, 죄를 용서받고, 구원받았으며, 하나님의 자녀로 입양되어 그분의 가족이 되었고, 하나님의 상속자가 될 운명을 부여받았다. 성령으로 인치심을 받고 능력을 받은 우리는 하나님의 은혜로운 돌보심 속에서 그분의 자녀로서 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 삶을 살아가는 데 필요한 모든 것을 공급받는다(3~14절). 우리가 어떤 도전이나 시련에 직면하든, 어떤 상실과 고통을 겪든, 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지께서는 “우리 가운데서 역사하시는 능력대로 우리가 구하거나 생각하는 모든 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실” 수 있는 분이시다(3:20).
