Living Water for Thirsty Souls(John 4:7-14)

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

(요 4:9) 사마리아 여자가 이르되 당신은 유대인으로서 어찌하여 사마리아 여자인 나에게 물을 달라 하나이까 하니 이는 유대인이 사마리아인과 상종하지 아니함이러라//Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

(요 4:10) 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 네가 만일 하나님의 선물과 또 네게 물 좀 달라 하는 이가 누구인 줄 알았더라면 네가 그에게 구하였을 것이요 그가 생수를 네게 주었으리라//Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

(요 4:12) 우리 조상 야곱이 이 우물을 우리에게 주셨고 또 여기서 자기와 자기 아들들과 짐승이 다 마셨는데 당신이 야곱보다 더 크니이까//Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

(요 4:14) 내가 주는 물을 마시는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리니 내가 주는 물은 그 속에서 영생하도록 솟아나는 샘물이 되리라//But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.[John 4:14]

In the Atacama Desert of Chile – one of the driest places on earth – researchers have installed large mesh nets on the hillsides. These “fog catchers” harvest water droplets from the coastal fog that rolls in from the Pacific, collecting hundreds of liters of clean water daily for communities where rain rarely falls. In a place of extreme thirst, water appears from an unexpected source.

A Samaritan woman came to a well at noon expecting only to draw water. Instead, she met Jesus, who asked her for a drink (John 4:7). The request itself was unexpected – Jews didn’t associate with Samaritans (v. 9). Then Jesus offered her something far greater: “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water” (v. 10).

The woman thought in terms of buckets and wells (v. 11), but Jesus spoke of a deeper thirst: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (vv. 13-14).

Like fog catchers in the desert, God provides for our deepest needs from unexpected sources. Jesus, the living water, satisfies the thirst of every soul that comes to Him. Xochitl Dixon

What “wells” have you gone to that left you thirsty again? How has Jesus satisfied your deepest needs?

Dear Jesus, thank You for being the living water that satisfies my thirsty soul.//

Scripture Insight(성경 통찰)

Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman (John 4:7-26) broke multiple social conventions. Jewish men didn’t typically speak with women in public, and Jews avoided Samaritans altogether (v. 9). Yet John shows Jesus deliberately traveling through Samaria (v. 4) to meet this woman. The “living water” Christ offered (v. 10) evokes Old Testament imagery where God Himself is called “the spring of living water” (Jeremiah 2:13; 17:13) and anticipates the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus would later describe as “rivers of living water” flowing from within believers (John 7:38-39). The woman’s encounter with Christ transformed her into one of the first evangelists in John’s gospel—she told her whole town about Him (4:28-30, 39-42). Today, Jesus still satisfies our deepest thirst.
