IN STEP WITH GOD(GALATIANS 5:16-26)

(갈 5:16) 내가 이르노니 너희는 성령을 따라 행하라 그리하면 육체의 욕심을 이루지 아니하리라//{This} I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

(갈 5:17) 육체의 소욕은 성령을 거스르고 성령은 육체를 거스르나니 이 둘이 서로 대적함으로 너희가 원하는 것을 하지 못하게 하려 함이니라//For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

(갈 5:18) 너희가 만일 성령의 인도하시는 바가 되면 율법 아래에 있지 아니하리라//But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

(갈 5:19) 육체의 일은 분명하니 곧 음행과 더러운 것과 호색과//Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are {these}; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

(갈 5:20) 우상 숭배와 주술과 원수 맺는 것과 분쟁과 시기와 분냄과 당 짓는 것과 분열함과 이단과//Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

(갈 5:21) 투기와 술 취함과 방탕함과 또 그와 같은 것들이라 전에 너희에게 경계한 것 같이 경계하노니 이런 일을 하는 자들은 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받지 못할 것이요//Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told {you} in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

(갈 5:22) 오직 성령의 열매는 사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과//But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

(갈 5:23) 온유와 절제니 이같은 것을 금지할 법이 없느니라//Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

(갈 5:24) 그리스도 예수의 사람들은 육체와 함께 그 정욕과 탐심을 십자가에 못 박았느니라//And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

(갈 5:25) 만일 우리가 성령으로 살면 또한 성령으로 행할지니//If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

(갈 5:26) 헛된 영광을 구하여 서로 노엽게 하거나 서로 투기하지 말지니라//Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Can you imagine sprinting as hard as you can possibly run . . . without being able to see? That’s what happens in Paralympic guide running. Blind runners compete with a guide, someone who runs alongside them step by step, connected by a short tether. American runner David Brown is among the world’s fastest blind Paralympian runners, having won a gold medal for running a 100-meter dash in under eleven seconds. Jerome Avery was Brown’s guide for much of his career. Brown described their connection this way: “We’re like one person.” Avery agreed, saying, “It should look like one person running.”

What a beautiful illustration of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Even when we’re running with all we’ve got, the Spirit stays perfectly in step with us-directing our every movement, guiding us this way and that.

성령의 인도하심을 이토록 아름답게 보여주는 비유가 또 있을까. 우리가 온 힘을 다해 달릴 때에도 성령님은 우리와 완벽히 발맞추시며 모든 동작을 지도하시고 방향을 인도하신다.

In Galatians 5, Paul describes how we overcome struggles with sin: by being in sync with the Spirit’s work in us. He writes, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (V. 16). A few verses later, he adds, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (V. 25). That, he says, would enable us to step past the “acts of the flesh” (V. 19) so we can be spiritually fruitful (VV. 22-23).

바울은 갈라디아서 5장에서 우리가 죄와 싸워 이기는 방법을 설명한다. 그것은 우리 안에서 일하시는 성령님과 호흡을 맞추는 것이다. 그는 이렇게 기록한다. “너희는 성령을 따라 행하라 그리하면 육체의 욕심을 이루지 아니 하리라”(16절). 이어서 몇 구절 뒤에 “만일 우리가 성령으로 살면 또한 성령으로 행할지니”(25절)라고 덧붙인다. 그렇게 하면 “육체의 일”(19절)을 넘어서서 영적으로 열매 맺는 삶(22–23절)을 살 수 있게 된다고 말한다.

Dear Father, thank You that the Holy Spirit helps me walk closely with You. Please help me keep in step with You!//사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 성령님께서 저를 도우셔서 하나님과 가까이 동행하게 하시니 감사합니다. 주님과 계속 발맞추어 걷도록 도와주소서! 주님이 걸어가시는 길을 한걸음 한걸음 놓치지 않고 따라가게 하소서. 오직 앞만 보고 눈길을 좌우로 돌리지 않게 하소서. 지나온 길에 대한 후회를 넘어 멀리 있는 앞만 보고 걸어가게 하소서.

SCRIPTURE INSIGHT(성경 통찰)

Paul had much to teach us about the Holy Spirit’s role in the life of the believer in Jesus. The moment a person believes in Christ through faith, they receive the Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:2, 14). Referred to as “the Spirit of his Son” (4:6), God sent Him to dwell in our hearts. He adopted us to become His children and empowers us to call Him “Abba, Father” (v. 6). The apostle warned that our sinful human nature continues to resist the indwelling Spirit (5:17). The key to victory is to live in the power of the Spirit. As we’re led by Him and walk and keep in step with Him, He helps us to overcome the vices of the sinful nature and live in a right relationship with God (vv. 5, 16, 18, 25). Such a Spirit-controlled life is one that pleases God as it bears the “fruit of the Spirit” (v. 22).

바울은 예수님을 믿는 사람의 삶에서 성령께서 하시는 역할에 대해 우리에게 많은 것을 가르쳐 주었다. 사람이 믿음으로 그리스도를 믿는 순간 성령을 받는다(갈라디아서 3:2, 14). 하나님은 “그 아들의 영”(4:6)이라고 불리는 성령을 보내셔서 우리 마음속에 거하게 하셨다. 하나님은 우리를 양자로 삼아 자신의 자녀가 되게 하셨으며, 우리가 하나님을 “아빠 아버지”(6절)라고 부를 수 있도록 능력을 주셨다. 사도 바울은 우리의 죄된 본성이 우리 안에 거하시는 성령을 계속해서 거스른다고 경고했다(5:17). 승리의 비결은 성령의 능력으로 살아가는 것이다. 우리가 성령의 인도하심을 받고 그분을 따라 행하며 그분과 보조를 맞출 때, 성령은 우리가 죄된 본성의 악한 행실을 이기고 하나님과 올바른 관계 속에서 살아가도록 도와주신다(5, 16, 18, 25절). 이처럼 성령의 다스림을 받는 삶은 “성령의 열매”(22절)를 맺음으로써 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 삶이다.
