PART OF GOD’S STORY(JUDGES 4:4-9, 14)

(삿 4:4) 그 때에 랍비돗의 아내 여선지자 드보라가 이스라엘의 사사가 되었는데//And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.

(삿 4:5) 그는 에브라임 산지 라마와 벧엘 사이 드보라의 종려나무 아래에 거주하였고 이스라엘 자손은 그에게 나아가 재판을 받더라//And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

(삿 4:6) 드보라가 사람을 보내어 아비노암의 아들 바락을 납달리 게데스에서 불러다가 그에게 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이같이 명령하지 아니하셨느냐 너는 납달리 자손과 스불론 자손 만 명을 거느리고 다볼 산으로 가라//And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the Lord God of Israel commanded, {saying}, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?

(삿 4:7) 내가 야빈의 군대 장관 시스라와 그의 병거들과 그의 무리를 기손 강으로 이끌어 네게 이르게 하고 그를 네 손에 넘겨 주리라 하셨느니라//And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.

(삿 4:8) 바락이 그에게 이르되 만일 당신이 나와 함께 가면 내가 가려니와 만일 당신이 나와 함께 가지 아니하면 나도 가지 아니하겠노라 하니//And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, {then} I will not go.

(삿 4:9) 이르되 내가 반드시 너와 함께 가리라 그러나 네가 이번에 가는 길에서는 영광을 얻지 못하리니 이는 여호와께서 시스라를 여인의 손에 파실 것임이니라 하고 드보라가 일어나 바락과 함께 게데스로 가니라//And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

(삿 4:14) 드보라가 바락에게 이르되 일어나라 이는 여호와께서 시스라를 네 손에 넘겨 주신 날이라 여호와께서 너에 앞서 나가지 아니하시느냐 하는지라 이에 바락이 만 명을 거느리고 다볼 산에서 내려가니//And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this {is} the day in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the Lord gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

(요절: 사사기 4:14) 여호와께서 너에 앞서 나가지 아니하시느냐//Has not the Lord gone ahead of you? [JUDGES 4:14]

Archaeologist Jodi Magness and her team have been excavating a synagogue in the ancient village of Huqoq in Lower Galilee, where they’ve found an incredible collection of mosaics, paintings, and carvings. Particularly rare, however, is a mosaic telling the biblical story of Deborah and her role in Israel’s battle against the Canaanites; there’s no other known ancient depiction of this heroine.

고고학자 조디 매그니스와 그녀의 연구팀은 갈릴리 남부의 고대 마을 후콕에서 회당을 발굴하다 놀라운 모자이크 작품과 그림, 조각품들을 발견했다. 특히 모자이크는 희귀하게도 성경 속 드보라의 이야기와 그가 이스라엘의 가나안 전투에서 맡았던 역할을 그려 놓았다. 이 여전사에 대한 고대 기록은 지금까지 알려진 바가 없었다.

During twenty years of oppression by Canaan, Deborah, a prophetess, “was leading Israel” (JUDGES 4:4). At God’s prompting, Deborah urged Israel’s general Barak to mount an attack on the Canaanite forces and their commander, Sisera. Barak heeded God’s instructions to “take … ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor” (V. 6), and Deborah lured the enemy’s army to the area. The Canaanite troops indeed fell in the battle, and though Sisera initially fled on foot, he too ultimately met his demise. “On that day God subdued … Canaan before the Israelites” (V. 23) through the courageous obedience of Deborah and Barak.

가나안의 20년 압제 속에서 여선지자 드보라는 “이스라엘의 사사”가 되었다”(사사기 4:4). 하나님의 말씀대로 드보라는 이스라엘 장군 바락에게 가나안 군대와 그들의 지휘관 시스라를 공격하라고 했다. 바락은 “납달리 자손과 스불론 자손 만 명을 거느리고 다불 산으로 가라”(6절)고 하신 하나님의 지시를 따랐고, 드보라는 적군을 그곳으로 유인했다. 가나안 군대는 전투에서 패했고 시스라는 걸어서 도망가다가 결국은 목숨을 잃었다. 드보라와 바락이 용기 있게 순종함으로 “이날에 하나님이 가나안 왕 야빈을 이스라엘 자손 앞에 굴복하게 하셨다”(23절).

The Bible preserves for us a literary mosaic of historical events in the life of God’s people – collectively and individually. We can take courage from these examples to heed God’s instructions even in the face of hardship and struggle. We can trust Him to equip us with the strength to do so. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

성경은 하나님의 백성이 힘을 합쳐 또는 혼자서 이루어낸 역사적 사건들을 우리를 위해 문학적인 모자이크처럼 보존하고 있다. 이 예들을 통해 우리는 용기를 얻어 역경과 고난 속에서도 하나님의 지시를 따를 수 있다. 우리는 그렇게 할 수 있도록 힘을 주시는 하나님께 의지할 수 있다.

When has God asked you to do something difficult? How did He equip and sustain you in that situation?

Heavenly Father, please give me the courage to heed Your instructions.//하나님 아버지, 하나님의 지시에 용기를 가지고 순종하게 하소서. 주 하나님이 지시하시면 무조건 따르게 하소서. 주님을 온전히 신뢰하며 그분의 공급하심을 믿고 먼저 발을 디디게 하소서.

SCRIPTURE INSIGHT(성경 통찰)

The book of Judges bridges the times between Joshua and the beginning of the monarchy under Saul (see 1 Samuel 9). It’s characterized by what some scholars call the “cycle of apostasy.” Each cycle begins when Israel falls away from God. Then He sends a neighboring nation to discipline them, followed by God’s provision of a judge to deliver them from that nation, and then a season of spiritual revival. Twelve different judges, from Othniel to Samson, are God’s instruments of rescue. Deborah is the fourth of those judges (Judges 4), whose season of leadership over Israel lasted about forty years, second only to Ehud, who judged for eighty years. Through the leadership and example of the judges, the people returned to God, and He enabled them to trust Him and obey His law afresh. Their example can remind us today that He’ll give us the strength to trust and obey Him no matter the circumstance.

사사기는 여호수아 시대와 사울 왕 아래에서 왕정이 시작되기 전 시대를 연결해 주는 책이다(삼상 9장 참조). 이 책은 일부 학자들이 “배교의 순환(cycle of apostasy)”이라고 부르는 특징을 보여 준다. 각 순환은 이스라엘이 하나님을 떠나는 것으로 시작된다. 그러면 하나님께서는 그들을 징계하시기 위해 이웃 나라를 보내시고, 이어서 그 나라로부터 그들을 구원할 사사를 세우시며, 그 후에는 영적 부흥의 시기가 이어진다. 옷니엘부터 삼손까지 모두 열두 명의 사사가 하나님의 구원의 도구로 사용되었다. 드보라는 그 사사들 가운데 네 번째 사사였다(삿 4장). 그녀는 약 40년 동안 이스라엘을 다스렸는데, 80년 동안 사사로 섬긴 에훗 다음으로 긴 기간이었다. 사사들의 지도력과 모범을 통해 백성은 하나님께 돌아왔고, 하나님께서는 그들이 다시 하나님을 신뢰하며 그분의 율법에 순종하도록 하셨다. 그들의 본은 오늘날 우리에게도 어떤 상황에서든 하나님을 신뢰하고 순종할 수 있는 힘을 하나님께서 주신다는 사실을 일깨워 준다.
