GOD’S BETTER COUNTRY(HEBREWS 11:8-16)

(히 11:8) 믿음으로 아브라함은 부르심을 받았을 때에 순종하여 장래의 유업으로 받을 땅에 나아갈새 갈 바를 알지 못하고 나아갔으며//By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

(히 11:9) 믿음으로 그가 이방의 땅에 있는 것 같이 약속의 땅에 거류하여 동일한 약속을 유업으로 함께 받은 이삭 및 야곱과 더불어 장막에 거하였으니//By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as {in} a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

(히 11:10) 이는 그가 하나님이 계획하시고 지으실 터가 있는 성을 바랐음이라//For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker {is} God.

(히 11:11) 믿음으로 사라 자신도 나이가 많아 단산하였으나 잉태할 수 있는 힘을 얻었으니 이는 약속하신 이를 미쁘신 줄 알았음이라//Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

(히 11:12) 이러므로 죽은 자와 같은 한 사람으로 말미암아 하늘의 허다한 별과 또 해변의 무수한 모래와 같이 많은 후손이 생육하였느니라//Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, {so many} as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

(히 11:13) 이 사람들은 다 믿음을 따라 죽었으며 약속을 받지 못하였으되 그것들을 멀리서 보고 환영하며 또 땅에서는 외국인과 나그네임을 증언하였으니//These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of {them}, and embraced {them}, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

(히 11:14) 그들이 이같이 말하는 것은 자기들이 본향 찾는 자임을 나타냄이라//For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

(히 11:15) 그들이 나온 바 본향을 생각하였더라면 돌아갈 기회가 있었으려니와//And truly, if they had been mindful of that {country} from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

(히 11:16) 그들이 이제는 더 나은 본향을 사모하니 곧 하늘에 있는 것이라 이러므로 하나님이 그들의 하나님이라 일컬음 받으심을 부끄러워하지 아니하시고 그들을 위하여 한 성을 예비하셨느니라//But now they desire a better {country}, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

(요절: 히브리서 11:16) 그들이 이제는 더 나은 본향을 사모하니 곧 하늘에 있는 것이라//They were longing for a better country-a heavenly one. [HEBREWS 11:16]

Michele experienced a mixture of emotions as her father neared the end of his life. She grieved when he said, “Honey, I won’t be here to walk you down the aisle.” But she assured him of her love, clinging to the hope she found in Hebrews 11 as she said, “You’re heading for a better country, a country in heaven.” Michele believed that her dad, when he died, would be with God forever. She reflected, “Heaven will be that good!”

아버지의 임종을 앞두고 여러 감정이 스쳤던 미셸은 아버지가 “얘야, 이젠 네 결혼식에 손잡고 들어가지 못하게 됐구나.” 하는 말씀에 슬퍼졌다. 그러나 미셸은 히브리서 11장의 소망의 말씀을 붙잡고 “아빠는 하늘에 있는 더 좋은 나라로 가시는 거잖아요.”라고 하며 변함없는 자기의 사랑을 전했다. 아버지가 돌아가시면 하나님과 영원히 함께 계실 것을 믿었던 미셸은 “천국은 정말로 좋은 곳!”이라는 것을 알고 있었다.

The letter to the Hebrews was aimed at Jewish believers in Jesus experiencing persecution by state and religious opponents. Although it was written before the destruction of the temple in ad 70, the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans may have occurred soon after. In this climate of fear, the author urged the believers to hold firm to their faith as he highlighted a great “cloud of witnesses” (HEBREWS 12:1). Each “did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance” (11:13). They lived by faith, “longing for a better country-a heavenly one.” God was pleased to be called their God, and He “prepared a city for them” (V. 16).

히브리서는 국가와 종교적 반대 세력의 박해를 받던 예수님을 믿는 유대인 신자들에게 쓴 편지이다. 이 서신은 서기 70년 성전이 파괴되기 전에 기록된 것이지만, 그 직후에 예루살렘이 로마에 의해 함락되었을 가능성도 있다. 이런 두려움 가운데 저자는 믿는 사람들에게 “구름 같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들” (히브리서 12:1)을 말하며 믿음을 굳게 지키라고 하였다. 그 증인들은 “약속을 받지 못하였으되 그것들을 멀리서 보고 환영하며”(11:13) 믿음으로 살면서 “더 나은 본향, 곧 하늘에 있는 것”을 사모했다. 하나님은 그들의 하나님이라 불리기를 기뻐하시며 “그들을 위하여 한 성을 예비하셨다”(16절).

Although Michele ached with sadness when her father died, she embraced the promises of her heavenly Father. We too can welcome these same promises “from a distance” (V. 13), trusting in God. AMY BOUCHER PYE

미셸은 아버지가 돌아가셔서 슬펐지만 하나님 아버지의 약속을 붙잡았다. 우리도 이같이 “멀리서” 바라보고 환영하며(13절) 믿음으로 그 약속들을 붙잡을 수 있다.

Heavenly Father, please help me live knowing that You’re trustworthy and will one day welcome me home.//하나님 아버지, 신실하신 하나님께서 언젠가 저를 본향에서 맞이해 주실 것을 믿으며 살 수 있게 도와주소서. 천국에서 주님을 만날 날이 점점 가까이 다가올수록 그것이 소망이 되게 하소서. 어느 날엔가 자다가 눈뜨고 일어나니 그곳이 천국이 될 것을 믿습니다. 주 예수 그리스도의 보혈의 공로를 의지하여 나아가오니 나를 받아 주소서.

SCRIPTURE INSIGHT(성경 통찰)

Hebrews 11 has been referred to as the “Hall of Faith” because everyone listed in the chapter is presented as a model of faith. This makes sense because verse 6 says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Because our human effort to do good will always fall short of God’s standard (Ephesians 2:8-9), we’re dependent upon Him by faith. By faith we trust God now, and one day we’ll be in His eternal presence (John 3:16).

히브리서 11장은 그 장에 나오는 모든 사람이 믿음의 본보기로 제시되기 때문에 “믿음의 전당”이라고 불려 왔다. 이는 6절이 “믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 못하나니 하나님께 나아가는 자는 반드시 그가 계신 것과 또한 그가 자기를 찾는 자들에게 상 주시는 이심을 믿어야 할지니라”라고 말하기 때문에 타당하다. 선을 행하려는 인간의 노력은 언제나 하나님의 기준에 미치지 못하기 때문에(에베소서 2:8-9), 우리는 믿음으로 그분을 의지한다. 우리는 지금 믿음으로 하나님을 신뢰하며, 언젠가는 그분의 영원한 임재 가운데 있게 될 것이다(요한복음 3:16).
