THE POWER OF MUSIC(1 SAMUEL 16:14-23)

(삼상 16:14) 여호와의 영이 사울에게서 떠나고 여호와께서 부리시는 악령이 그를 번뇌하게 한지라//But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

(삼상 16:15) 사울의 신하들이 그에게 이르되 보소서 하나님께서 부리시는 악령이 왕을 번뇌하게 하온즉//And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

(삼상 16:16) 원하건대 우리 주께서는 당신 앞에서 모시는 신하들에게 명령하여 수금을 잘 타는 사람을 구하게 하소서 하나님께서 부리시는 악령이 왕에게 이를 때에 그가 손으로 타면 왕이 나으시리이다 하는지라//Let our lord now command thy servants, {which are} before thee, to seek out a man, {who is} a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

(삼상 16:17) 사울이 신하에게 이르되 나를 위하여 잘 타는 사람을 구하여 내게로 데려오라 하니//And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring {him} to me.

(삼상 16:18) 소년 중 한 사람이 대답하여 이르되 내가 베들레헴 사람 이새의 아들을 본즉 수금을 탈 줄 알고 용기와 무용과 구변이 있는 준수한 자라 여호와께서 그와 함께 계시더이다 하더라//Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, {that is} cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord {is} with him.

(삼상 16:19) 사울이 이에 전령들을 이새에게 보내어 이르되 양 치는 네 아들 다윗을 내게로 보내라 하매//Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which {is} with the sheep.

(삼상 16:20) 이새가 떡과 한 가죽부대의 포도주와 염소 새끼를 나귀에 실리고 그의 아들 다윗을 시켜 사울에게 보내니//And Jesse took an ass {laden} with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent {them} by David his son unto Saul.

(삼상 16:21) 다윗이 사울에게 이르러 그 앞에 모셔 서매 사울이 그를 크게 사랑하여 자기의 무기를 드는 자로 삼고//And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

(삼상 16:22) 또 사울이 이새에게 사람을 보내어 이르되 원하건대 다윗을 내 앞에 모셔 서게 하라 그가 내게 은총을 얻었느니라 하니라//And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

(삼상 16:23) 하나님께서 부리시는 악령이 사울에게 이를 때에 다윗이 수금을 들고 와서 손으로 탄즉 사울이 상쾌하여 낫고 악령이 그에게서 떠나더라//And it came to pass, when the {evil} spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

On November 21, 1915, the hope of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his twenty-seven crew members sank, along with their ship Endurance, into the darkness below the Antarctic ice. They were stranded thousands of miles from home. Later, the crew shared several things that aided their survival, including a banjo. Embarking on their brutal trek, Leonard Hussey (the expedition’s meteorologist) was the only person allowed more than two pounds of personal gear. He was allowed to bring his twelve-pound Windsor banjo. “It’s vital mental medicine,” Shackleton told Hussey, “and we shall need it.” The crew’s journals explained the power of Hussey’s music. “The banjo does … supply brain food,” wrote one sailor. Another reflected on “Hussey’s indispensable banjo.”

The Bible presents music as one of God’s immense gifts, a way His healing and comfort enter the human heart. In the tragic story of King Saul, we hear how (due to his disobedience) he was oppressed by an “evil spirit” (1 SAMUEL 16:14). And what did Saul’s attendants believe the king needed to provide relief? Music. So they found young David with his harp: “David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him” (V. 23).

성경은 음악을 하나님의 엄청난 선물의 하나로, 하나님의 치유와 위로가 사람의 마음에 스며드는 방법이라고 한다. 사울 왕의 비극의 이야기에서는 (불순종 때문에) 그가 “악령”에 시달렸다고 했다(사무엘상 16:14). 그때 사울의 시종들은 왕의 안정을 위해 무엇이 필요하다고 믿었던가? 바로 음악이다. 그래서 그들은 수금을 타는 어린 다윗을 찾았다. “다윗이 수금을 들고 와서 손으로 탄 즉 사울이 상쾌하여 낫고 악령이 그에게서 떠났다”(23절)고 기록한다.
